Brad Lander Announces Sweeping “Stop the Corruption” Public Integrity Plan to Restore Honesty & Ethics to City Hall

Lander’s tough, wide-ranging solution includes increasing insight into government workings, greater media accessibility, making COIB independent, closing lobby loopholes & more

NEW YORK — As part of his commitment to clean up corruption, restore faith in our public systems, and make New York City better-run, New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander today announced the most sweeping and transparent public integrity plan of any mayoral candidate in the 2025 race. In stark contrast to the current administration, as Mayor, Lander will bring to City Hall the transparency, integrity, and honesty he has demonstrated as Comptroller.

“It’s time to bring outstanding public integrity back to City Hall,” said Brad Lander. “New Yorkers are fed up with a government marred by corruption and scandal — and are hungry for a city that delivers for them. The last thing we need is a mayor who is constantly embroiled in chaos, with an inner circle indicted for public corruption and an ethics record that brings shame to New Yorkers. I’m committed to extending the high standard of government transparency and public integrity I set at 1 Centre across the street to City Hall Park.”

Brad Lander’s comprehensive, innovative “Stop the Corruption” solution will bring:

  • Transparency in City Hall: Lander will proactively release his and his deputy mayors’ public schedules, publicly disclose all meetings with lobbyists, release his tax returns annually without delay, and streamline the FOIL request process.

  • Media Accessibility: To restore City Hall’s relationship with the press, Lander will commit to transparent communication with the media well beyond limited weekly press conferences. Lander will answer on and off topic questions at press conferences, protect reporters’ right to access him and his team even amidst disagreement, move the “shack” — the workspace for news outlets who cover the NYPD — back into the Police Department headquarters.

  • COIB Independence: Lander will ensure that our structures of accountability are truly functional by supporting legislation to make the NYC Conflicts of Interest Board (COIB) independent by removing the mayoral majority on its board and giving it a fixed budget.

  • An End to Corruption in Procurement: Lander will implement recommendations from his office’s report on Preventing Corruption in Procurement, building on the DOI’s report on corruption in human service contracts, to protect the integrity of the City’s 12,000+ new procurement contracts each year.

  • Comptroller Review of Defense Lawyers for Administration Officials: Lander will ensure the NYC Comptroller approves Law Department representation or retention of outside counsel to represent Administration officials.

  • Closing of Lobbying Loopholes: Lander will implement Intro 77-2024 to close loopholes in lobbying restrictions and ensure that no high-ranking City Hall staffer can lobby City agency for two years following their departure from City service.
