Lander Lays Out Threats to NYC of Trump’s Leverage Over Adams, Calls it “Extraordinary Situation That Puts New Yorkers in Serious Danger” & Says Adams Should Resign
With President Trump able to revive criminal charges against Adams at any time, New Yorkers won’t have a Mayor who can stand up to Trump when he harms & threatens NYC
Lander: “When I’m mayor, my administration won’t just be allowed to oppose Donald Trump when he screws over the city. They’ll be expected to.”

NEW YORK, NY — Brad Lander today laid out the dangers to New York City stemming from the fact that Mayor Eric Adams' personal and legal fate is now beholden to the whims of President Donald Trump. With the Justice Department’s memo making it clear that Adams’ charges are being dropped “without prejudice” and that they can resume charges at any time, Lander said the Southern District of New York should either reject the Department of Justice’s request to drop the charges or at minimum, drop the charges without the prejudice stipulation that allows the President to maintain unchecked control over the Mayor. In addition, Lander said the Mayor should resign.
“This is an extraordinary situation that puts New Yorkers in serious danger,” Lander said. “When I’m Mayor, New Yorkers will have what they need and deserve: A mayor who will be in Donald Trump’s face, staring him down, every single day to stand up for our city. And when I’m mayor, my administration won’t just be allowed to oppose Donald Trump when he screws over the city. They’ll be expected to.”
Lander noted that New Yorkers require real leadership to fight back against numerous Trump directives, including but not limited to:
Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump threatening education funding because of NYC’s sanctuary city status;
Elon Musk handing over control of New Yorkers’ most sensitive documents and information;
Trump ordering ICE to illegally round up immigrants with no criminal records and threatening to roll back birthright citizenship;
Trump seeking to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to hold banks and corporations accountable;
Trump threatening to freeze federal funding and leave firefighters, educators, veterans, and health care workers out to dry.
