In Stunning New Interview, Cuomo Stands With Trump, Says He Thinks Trump Could Be Good for NYC
Lander: I’ll be a Mayor who actually stands up to Trump and fights his cuts to our funding, services, jobs & congestion pricing
In a new interview with Stephen A. Smith, Cuomo praises Trump & wants to wait and see – Is he not paying attention (because he’s new to NYC), scared of Trump, or beholden?

NEW YORK, NY — Brad Lander today took Andrew Cuomo to task for passively deferring to Donald Trump in a new interview, and demanded the disgraced former governor provide answers to New Yorkers on how he would tackle Trump’s threats to our City. In an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Cuomo stood by the president who has stolen $80 million from the City in taxpayer money, cut federal jobs, and sought to halt congestion pricing.
“Either Andrew Cuomo isn't paying attention because he hasn’t lived in the city for decades, or he's just as scared to stand up to Trump as Eric Adams is,” Brad Lander said today. “As Mayor I’ll continue to fight like hell for New Yorkers and stand up to Trump, not bend the knee like Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo.”
In the interview, asked about protecting New Yorkers from Trump, Cuomo said: “[Donald Trump] knows the situation in New York City. It is his hometown…I think there’s an opportunity for him to do GOOD things in NYC. And really, we have to see what he does, what posture President Trump takes. And if you want to be an optimist, you say he's going to say New York is his hometown and he wants to help.”
Cuomo’s comments defy comprehension – but make more sense when you realize he has not lived in New York City for decades and is only moving here to run for mayor. While Cuomo wants to wait and see how Trump will treat New York City, the following has already occurred:
Donald Trump and Elon Musk stole $80M from New York City’s bank account. Would Andrew Cuomo take them to court, which is what Brad Lander successfully pressed the Adams Administration to do, under duress?
Donald Trump threatened to cancel $100 billion in housing, human services and health care funding to NYC.
Donald Trump fired thousands of federal employees - threatening the jobs of the nearly 50,000 federal workers that live in NYC
Donald Trump is working to dismantle the CDC, the NIH, HHS while bird flu is another pandemic waiting to happen.
Donald Trump tried to cancel congestion pricing and called himself a king.
Donald Trump proposed a budget that cut $880 billion from Medicaid.
Donald Trump has sent ICE to round up children and seniors in schools and places of worship.
By contrast, Lander has stood up against Trump on behalf of New Yorkers from Day 1. His office uncovered that Elon Musk and Trump stole $80 million from the City, and Lander immediately pressured the City to sue. When Trump threatened over $100 billion in funding to NYC nonprofits, Lander led the charge against him.
