NEW YORK, NY — Brad Lander’s social media content with his daughter, Rosa Lander, at the Met Gala has garnered 2.4M views across Instagram and TikTok. The University of Chicago student accompanied her dad who, as the City Comptroller and an ex-officio member of the museum’s board, gets free tickets to the fundraiser. While Lander wore the suit he got married in, Rosa tapped Brooklyn designer Parron Allen to help create her vision. Parron’s “designs evoke a cohesive aesthetic of sophisticated whimsy and an attitude of resolute joy.”

The New York Post said, “The biggest fashion statement at Monday’s Met Gala wasn’t any of the flamboyant outfits worn by celebrities, but a smartly tailored black blazer sporting a giant union logo. The jacket — featuring the logo of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, once an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) emblazoned on the back — was worn by Rosa Lander, the daughter of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is also a Democratic candidate for mayor.”

Rosa Lander said: “From the beginning, my goal for my Met Gala look was to showcase the work and stories of Black NYC artists. I know what this event means in the world of fashion and art in this city and I didn’t want to waste that opportunity. I have followed the sustainable fashion/lifestyle blog sustainable baddie, founded by Jazmine Rogers, for a while. One of the designers they had written about was Parron Allen. I loved his playful, structural designs, and his use of entirely upcycled/deadstock materials. When looking into his work further, I really connected with his framing of clothing as a conversation starter, as a story. Parron moved to NYC from Mississippi and found a love for garment creation through his grandmother. He views sustainability as a part of cultural heritage and takes immense pride in his work. You can feel the joy Parron takes in his craft in his designs, and I was thrilled when he agreed to work with me on this event.”

Rosa Lander: Come get ready with me to be the least famous person at the Met Gala. My dad's the City Comptroller, and so he gets a free ticket.

Brad Lander: As a citywide elected official, it's an honor to support New York City's cultural institutions. My office even did a report on how the creative sector drives the city's economy. Somehow the job comes with a ticket to the Met Gala. I say it's because of an old City Comptroller, Andrew Haswell Green. He's the reason that the Met is in Central Park. That was a century ago. But they keep the tickets coming. This year I'm taking my daughter Rosa.

Rosa: The theme this year is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, centered on Black dandyism and the history of Black tailoring and style as power.  I was really excited to be able to work with Parron Allen, who's a sustainable Black designer from Brooklyn who made this incredible suit.

The look is inspired by Floria Pinkney, who was a garment worker and labor activist in the 1920s. She was the first Black woman to hold a position of power on the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, which we're repping tonight.  Hoping to be able to honor some of this incredible history. Happy Met!
