National Progressive Champion Congressman Greg Casar Endorses Brad Lander for Mayor
Rep. Casar: “If you want a mayor who will stand up and fight against Donald Trump's attacks on working Americans, Brad Lander is the candidate for you”
Casar serves as Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus
NEW YORK, NY — Today, Rep. Greg Casar (TX-35), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, endorsed Brad Lander for New York City Mayor. At a time when Democrats in New York City and nationally are desperately searching for leaders who will unapologetically stand up to Donald Trump and his authoritarian administration, Rep. Casar’s endorsement cements Lander’s status as the clear mayoral candidate to be that leader for the City.
“If you want a mayor who will stand up and fight against Donald Trump's attacks on working Americans, Brad Lander is the candidate for you,” Greg Casar said. “With daily attacks on working people and immigrant communities coming out of Washington, Brad Lander will go to the mat for the rights of New Yorkers and help show all Americans what is possible."
“I’m thrilled to receive the endorsement from Representative Greg Casar, whose track record of delivering for working families represents the best of the Democratic Party, especially in the critical moment we find ourselves in,” Brad Lander said. “Rep. Casar has led the charge against Donald Trump’s authoritarian regime and his support helps our campaign reach voters and continue building the broadest, strongest coalition in this race.”
Rep. Casar has emerged as a national leader in the Trump resistance. As Austin's youngest-ever council member, Rep. Casar passed a tenant relocation ordinance to protect renters from displacement and played a key role in the city’s transition to 100% renewable energy for municipal buildings. Now representing Texas's 35th district in Congress and as Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Greg continues his mission to fight for the working class and recently advocated for a $15 federal minimum wage to uplift millions of American workers.
Rep. Casar’s endorsement comes as Lander has staunchly protected New Yorkers in the face of Trump as the City Comptroller. When Elon Musk and DOGE wiped $80 million in FEMA funding to the City, Lander’s office caught and exposed the overreach and immediately pressured the City’s Law Department to take legal action against the Trump administration. Lander has also vowed to, as Mayor, double the City’s general reserve fund to protect New Yorkers’ funding from future clawbacks.
Unlike other candidates, such as Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams who have declined to stand up to Trump, Lander has staunchly defended New Yorkers against Trump’s relentless attacks on the City. Lander has vehemently defended congestion pricing after Trump’s attempts to block it and has hosted multiple events with key figures in New York City’s business, labor, and immigrant communities to prepare for economic hardships and damaging tariffs from the administration.
Rep. Casar’s endorsement comes on the heels of Indivisible Brooklyn and 504 Democrats throwing their endorsements behind Lander just this week.
Lander leads the mayoral pack in Democratic club endorsements, including Bay Ridge Democrats, Three Parks Democrats, Broadway Democrats, Village Independent Democrats, Upper West Side Action Group, Hell’s Kitchen Democrats, Independent Neighborhood Democrats, New Kings Dems, and Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats.
And Lander has received endorsements from UAW Region 9A, New York Progressive Action Network, JFREJ, and NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees, and support from the widest coalition of elected officials, including NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, State Senator Liz Krueger, State Senator Andrew Gounardes, Assemblymember Robert Carroll, and Councilmember Tiffany Cabán.
Lander’s campaign coffers total over $6.71 million, according to the latest filings, well above the pace needed to surpass the mayoral race’s $8.3 million spending cap.
